Litigation Support Companies

Sunday, August 27th, 2006

Seems like every day I come across a number of new litigation support companies. It’s not too surprising as this is boom time for this industry. In reaction to both cases like BOA and Morgan Stanley and pending law changes to rules covering electronic discovery, lawyers and firms everywhere are evaluating how they manage their cases and the explosion of potentially productive discovery.

What the firms may not know is that their vendors are also working with other litigation support companies to handle the high volume of discovery to process. As example, check out FIOS’ web page. Law firms should look at their litigation support company’s overflow partners. Here’s a second surprise - many large litigation support companies also use smaller, local companies for thier own overflow. Partnering is actually a great thing, so long as you like your project manager and the buck, ultimately, stops with him (or her).

Bumping Method Proves All Locks Worthless

Sunday, August 27th, 2006

Summary -

Apparently, if you modify a regular key and tap it with a hammer, you can open pretty much every lock. There’s video and more. Sleep tight.

From http://www.toool.nl/index-eng.php

Right after our appearance on NovaTV we where contacted by the Dutch ‘consumentenbond’ (Dutch Consumer Reports). They wanted to test all locks from the Dutch Police Seal of Approval to see how big the bump-key problem really was. So they asked Toool for help. For us it was a dream assignment. Together with our German friends of www.ssdev.org we helped them test 60 popular high security locks. These locks where on the recommendation list of the Dutch Police Seal of Approval.

The outcome of the test? 80% of these high security locks could be bumped open by us in under three minutes. Damage free. More then 50% of that in under one minute. But that was not all. Dutch Consumer Reports also tested how difficult it was for a layman to open these locks. From the 47 locks we opened the layman could open 22! These laymen are people who have no experience with locks whatsoever, yet still opened these locks in under three minutes. Not a bad score if you keep in mind most of these locks are rated ‘burglar proof’ for 5 to 10 minutes (depending on their SKG star rating).

CONCLUSION of the report:
It is disturbing that the Dutch Police Seal of Approval (PKVW) still does not take bumping keys into account, and that several manufacturers and importers of cylinder locks trivialise this problem. Dutch Consumer reports presses the organisations involved to take steps against bumping.

There is a white paper: http://www.toool.nl/bumping.pdf

There is also a video: http://connectmedia.waag.org/toool/21c3.wmv

The PDF is great and really shows you everything you need to know. The video shows the method working.
