Recovering Passwords

Introduction |
In a recent article, I talked about security and the benefits of a password utility (AccountLogon.com). The software is a safe location for storing logins and passwords. It even logs the user into websites. But what about recovering other people's passwords for their files? What happens when no one knows the password, including the creator?
Warning - Opening files may cause spoliation:

Protocols |
The law firm should take appropriate precautions, such as having a policy for the handling of electronic discovery as protection for client, litigator and firm.
The more electronic discovery one encounters in litigation, the greater the chance some of it will be password protected. Can you foresee incidents in your practice where password cracking software would be an advantage? Certainly, one can outsource password cracking to vendors, and there are firms where this is the preferred procedure. However, if the Litigation Support Department owns a copy of software such as the Login Password Recovery Kit, then there is a very good chance they will recoup the costs to "crack" these files.

Best Practices |
As with all companies, there is a chance that yours has password protected files. The larger office with a longer employment history more than likely has such files. What are the chances anyone has the passwords? People lock their files with passwords for all sorts of reasons. Years later, another person will need to use password software to open these files. This is the type of tool that every IT Department should own. In fact, it will also guess Windows logons when the user is absent. You may not need to use the kit today, but chances are good that you'll need to eventually. What's the rush? The answer lies in preparation and turnaround time. |

Use |
The login recovery software is very easy to install and use. To use, simply drag the locked file onto the recovery window. Upon success, the software displays the recovered password. The kit handles zip, Quicken, MS Office files like Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and Acrobat. It also works with Lotus Notes, SQL and more. |

Hint |
Only have one or two files to unlock? Passware, also offers a web based service, Decryptum. The website Decryptum.com will unlock any Word or Excel password in less than 3 minutes.
Software Title: Lost Password Recovery Kit
Website: LostPassword.com
Cost: Free demo, paid licensing from $355.00 to $3,465.00
Hope this article has been of help and interest.
